Google does not score your business. For every search it decides which businesses and pages answer that person best, and ranks them. In Maps, Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. In regular results, it rewards pages that are genuinely useful and trustworthy. In 2026 the same foundations feed AI Overviews and AI Mode. Almost everything that moves your position is under your control, except distance, and none of it can be bought.
Google does not grade you, it compares you
The question most owners ask is “what score does Google give my business?”. There is no such score. The star rating on your profile is your customers’ average, not Google’s opinion of you. What Google does is rank: for each search it compares every business and page that could answer it, and orders them.
That has a practical consequence. Your business does not have one position on Google, it has hundreds. You can be first for “dentista en Playas de Tijuana” searched two blocks away and not appear for “dentista Tijuana” searched from Otay. Before deciding whether you are doing well or badly, you need to know for which searches, from where, and against whom.
In Maps: relevance, distance and prominence
Google states it plainly in its Business Profile help: local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. It also states that you cannot request or pay for a better local ranking.
Relevance is how well your profile matches what the person searched. It depends on your primary category, secondary categories, listed services and products, and the description. A clinic that picks “Medical clinic” as its category when what it sells is dermatology is competing in the wrong search.
Distance is how far you are from the person searching, or from the place named in the search. It is the one factor you cannot optimise, which is why a business can rank very differently in Zona Río and in Rosarito on the same day.
Prominence (Google’s Spanish help calls it “popularidad”) is how well known your business is. Google says it is based on things like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. In practice, it is your reputation beyond your own profile.
The profile itself has to be complete and true: exact name, category, hours including holidays, phone, real photos, services. We go step by step in how to optimize your Google Business Profile.
In regular results: useful, trustworthy content
For the blue links, Google’s guidance is to create helpful, reliable, people-first content, and it evaluates signals of experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, known as E-E-A-TExperience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness. It is how Google describes what it looks for in content, especially on health and money topics.Read more →. Of the four, Google says trust is the most important.
Translated to a small business, that means a page per service that answers what a customer actually asks before hiring you: what it includes, who it is for, how long it takes, a price or at least a range, where you work, and who is behind it. A single “Services” page with a list of bullets rarely wins a specific search, because it does not answer any of them in full.
It also means real signals of who you are: your address, your team, your work, your permits or certifications when your industry has them. We list what a business site needs in what a website should include.
The technical part that does matter
No content helps if Google cannot find it. The first check is indexing: in Google Search ConsoleGoogle’s free tool that shows which searches your website appears for, how many clicks it gets and whether errors stop Google from reading it.Read more → you can see which of your pages are indexed and why the rest are not. A page that is not indexed does not exist for Google, and it cannot appear in AI Overviews either.
Then page experience on a phone. Google measures it with Core Web VitalsThree Google measurements of what using your website feels like: how fast the main content loads, how quickly it responds when tapped and how much it shifts while loading.Read more →, and the thresholds for a good experience are: the main content loads in 2.5 seconds or less (LCP), the page responds to a tap in 200 milliseconds or less (INP) and the layout does not jump while loading (CLS of 0.1 or less). They are not the most important factor, but a slow site loses customers before it loses positions. More in website loading speed.
Reviews: how many, how recent, and how you ask
Google says more positive reviews and ratings can help local ranking, but there is no magic number. What matters is how you compare with the businesses you compete against in that search, and whether the reviews keep coming. A profile with 200 reviews, the last one a year ago, looks abandoned next to one with 60 from the last few months.
How you get them matters as much as how many. Google’s policies prohibit fake reviews, reviews paid for with discounts or gifts, and asking only happy customers for them. The penalties go beyond deleting those reviews: a profile can lose the ability to receive new ones for a while. The safe system is to ask every customer, the same way, right after the service. The details are in how to get Google reviews.
Replying also counts, for the people reading more than for the algorithm. A calm, specific reply to a bad review tells the next customer more than the review itself.
AI Overviews and AI Mode: same foundations, new format
More and more searches get an AI-written answer at the top, the AI Overviews, and AI Mode lets people have a whole conversation with Search. AI Mode has worked in Spanish since September 2025, so it reaches your customers in Tijuana and Ensenada too.
The good news is that there is no separate game to learn. Google’s own documentation says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in these features, that you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special Structured data (schema)Code that describes your page in a format Google understands: hours, prices, FAQs or reviews. It can help you appear with more information in the results., and that a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. The same practices apply: allow crawling, link your pages to each other, put the important information in text, and keep your Business Profile up to date.
Be wary of anyone selling a special “AI optimization” package that does not start with those basics. If your page is not indexed or does not answer the question, no extra file will fix it.
What changed in 2026
Google confirmed two core updates so far this year: one that started on 27 March and took about 12 days, and another that started on 21 May and took about 12 days. It also ran spam updates in March, June, August and September.
A core update does not target a specific tactic. Google reassesses which content best answers each search, so pages can go up or down without having done anything wrong. The mistake we see most is changing everything in the first week. Positions move for days while an update rolls out; compare in Search Console two or three weeks after it ends, and only then decide what to fix.
Spam updates are different: they target practices Google prohibits, such as mass-produced content made to rank rather than to help, which Google calls scaled content abuse. If someone is filling your site with dozens of near-identical generic pages, that is the risk you are running.
What this looks like in Tijuana and Ensenada
The border adds a variable most markets do not have: part of your customers search from the United States, in English, and often by city name rather than “near me”. Distance works against you there, so relevance and prominence carry more of the weight: a profile with the right category, services written in both languages when you actually serve both, and reviews that mention what you do.
In Ensenada and the Valle, tourist searches spike by season and are made from a phone on the road. Hours, phone and location being correct matters more there than any blog article. We cover the local picture in SEO in Tijuana.
A 30-minute check you can run today
First, search the three or four phrases a customer would use for what you sell, plus your city, from your phone and with location on. Write down who appears in the map and in the first results. Those are your real competitors, not the ones you imagine.
Second, open your Business Profile as if you were a customer: category, hours, phone, photos, the date of your last review and whether you replied. Compare it, point by point, with the first business that appeared.
Third, in Search Console check that your service pages are indexed, and in PageSpeed Insights look at how your home page does on mobile.
Fourth, search your business name. What appears besides your site: directories, articles, social profiles, reviews on other platforms? That is what feeds prominence, and it is also what AI assistants read about you, as we explain in how ChatGPT decides which businesses to recommend.
If you want a structured version of this, our free diagnostic asks the same questions for your industry and gives you your priorities in order.
Frequently asked questions
No. Google states that you cannot request or pay for a better local ranking. What does exist is Google Ads, which appear labeled as sponsored and do not change your organic position. Your place on the map depends on your business’s relevance, distance and prominence.
There is no fixed number. Google says more positive reviews and ratings can help, but what counts is how you compare with the businesses competing with you for that search, and whether recent reviews keep coming in. Ask every customer the same way; asking only happy customers or paying for reviews with discounts breaks Google’s policies.
Because you do not have a single position. Results change depending on where the search is made, the exact words and what else Google finds at that moment. There are also updates: in 2026 there were core updates in March and May. To know whether you really dropped, look at the trend in Search Console over several weeks, not a single search.
No. Google’s documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that you do not need new files, AI text files or special structured data. The page has to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. The usual SEO fundamentals apply.
It depends on the change. Fixing Business Profile details can show within days or weeks. New content and reputation on other sites take months, usually 4 to 6 to see movement and longer to compound. If someone promises you first place within weeks, ask exactly what they are going to do.
