ChatGPT has no list of recommended businesses and no one can pay to be named in its answers. For current or local questions it searches the web, reads the pages it is allowed to read, pulls business listings from third-party providers and summarises. So whether your business appears comes down to four things: that ChatGPT can read your site, that your information matches everywhere, that other people talk about you, and that your pages answer the question in full. OpenAI confirms the first; the other three follow from how it builds its answers.
Two ways ChatGPT knows about you: memory and search
ChatGPT can answer from what it learned during training, or by searching the web at the moment of the question. For anything that changes, like which businesses are open, where they are or what they charge, it leans on search, and it shows the sources it used as links.
That matters because the two depend on different things. What the model learned is fixed until the next version and you cannot influence it this month. What it finds when it searches depends on what is published about you today. For a local business, search is almost the whole game.
OpenAI’s own help page is candid about the rest: ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors intended to find relevant, reliable information, and placement is not guaranteed. Anyone who promises you a guaranteed position in ChatGPT is promising something OpenAI does not.
First filter: it has to be able to read you
OpenAI uses different robots for different jobs, and your site’s robots.txt file decides which ones get in. OAI-SearchBot is the one that finds sites for ChatGPT’s search. OpenAI says sites that block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, only, at most, as a plain link. GPTBot is the one that collects content for training future models.
They are independent: you can allow OAI-SearchBot so you appear in answers and block GPTBot so your content is not used for training. OpenAI says changes to robots.txt take about 24 hours to apply.
It is worth checking, because some HostingThe service that stores your website’s files and keeps it available on the internet around the clock.Read more → and security services offer to block “AI bots” with one switch, and some site owners flipped it without knowing it also takes them out of ChatGPT’s answers.
Reading also means text. A menu uploaded only as a photo, prices inside an image or services described only in a video are practically invisible to a system that summarises text. What you want ChatGPT to repeat has to be written on the page.
Second filter: your information has to match everywhere
For local questions, OpenAI says ChatGPT may share the user’s location with trusted third-party providers that supply local information such as nearby business listings, and on the phone apps the answer can include a map. OpenAI does not name those providers, and its help page also mentions working with other search providers.
Since you cannot know exactly which listing ChatGPT is reading on a given day, the practical answer is to have the same name, address, phone, hours and category everywhere your business appears: Google Business ProfileYour free listing on Google and Google Maps with your address, hours, photos and reviews. It is the first thing many people see when they search for your business.Read more →, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook, and the directories that matter in your industry. This is our recommendation, not something OpenAI publishes: an AI that finds two different phone numbers for the same business has a reason to doubt both.
If your business is in several listings with an old address or a number that no longer works, fixing that is the cheapest improvement on this list.
Third filter: what other people say about you
When someone asks “what is the best taquería in Ensenada?”, the answer usually leans on sources that compare: reviews, local guides, press notes, “best of” lists and forums. OpenAI does not publish a list of these signals, so treat this as a reasonable hypothesis rather than a rule: if answers are built from what can be found on the web, a business that is only described by its own website gives ChatGPT less to work with than one that other people mention too.
That is the same reputation that helps you on Google, which is why the two efforts overlap. Reviews on several platforms, a mention in a local media outlet, being listed in your professional association or chamber of commerce, and collaborations with other businesses all add up. None of it is quick, and all of it is also useful with human customers.
Fourth filter: your page has to answer the whole question
People ask ChatGPT long, specific questions: “a pediatric dentist in Tijuana who takes Saturday appointments and speaks English”. The page that gets cited is the one that answers those details in writing: the service, the city and area, hours, languages, a price range, who it is for, and frequent questions.
Clear structure helps: one page per service, headings that say what each part is about, and answers in the first lines rather than buried after three paragraphs of introduction. It is the same structure that works on Google, which we explain in the SEO guide.
What does not work, or is not proven
Paying for the answer. OpenAI started testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States on 9 February 2026 and is rolling them out gradually to Free and Go users in select regions. Its rules are explicit: ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers, they run on separate systems, and they appear labeled as sponsored below the response. Advertising can put you under an answer; it cannot put you inside one.
Special files. There is a lot of talk about llms.txt. OpenAI’s publisher documentation does not mention it, and Google says you do not need new AI text files to appear in its AI features. It is not harmful, but it does not replace anything on this list.
Mass-produced content. Filling a site with dozens of generic AI-written pages does not make you more visible to ChatGPT, and it can hurt you on Google, whose spam policies call it scaled content abuse. Since ChatGPT often finds pages through search, losing ground on search engines is also losing ground here.
Why it answers you differently
If you ask ChatGPT about your own business and your cousin asks the same thing, you can get different answers. OpenAI says that when memory is on, saved memories can shape how it rewrites a search, and a saved location can influence the results. The same wording can also produce different answers from one day to the next.
So one test proves nothing. Use a temporary chat, which does not use memory, ask the same questions several times, and track the pattern over months, not a single screenshot.
How to measure it
The hard data first. OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends to websites. In Google AnalyticsGoogle’s free tool to see how many people visit your website, where they come from and what they do there. you can see those visits as their own source and which pages they land on. If you get none, ChatGPT is not sending people to your site, whatever a screenshot says.
Then the question nobody asks: when a new customer arrives, ask how they found you, and add “ChatGPT or another AI” as an option. Many people read the recommendation and then search your name on Google or send a WhatsApp, and that visit never shows up as coming from ChatGPT.
Finally, a monthly test. Write ten questions a real customer would ask, run them in a temporary chat, and note whether you appear, in what position and next to whom. Ten questions a month tell you more than a hundred on one afternoon.
Knowing where your customers come from is one of the questions in our free diagnostic, because without that data every decision is a guess. And since a good part of what ChatGPT reads comes from search engines, start with how Google evaluates your business.
Frequently asked questions
No. OpenAI states that ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter its responses. Ads, which started testing in the United States in February 2026, appear labeled as sponsored and separated, below the response.
It depends on which one you block. If you block OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI says your site will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. If you only block GPTBot, your content is not used to train models, but you can still appear in searches. They are independent settings in your robots.txt file.
It is not necessary. OpenAI’s documentation for websites does not mention it, and Google says AI text files are not needed for its AI features. What does count is that OAI-SearchBot can access your site and that the important information is written on your pages.
The most common causes are that your site blocks OAI-SearchBot, that your information does not match across listings and directories, that hardly anyone else mentions your business, or that your pages do not answer what people ask. Check the four in that order. And remember that answers vary by person and day: one test is not enough.
OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends, so you can see those visits separately in Google Analytics. Also ask every new customer how they found you and include “ChatGPT or another AI” as an option, because many people read the recommendation and then search for you by name.
